Is a sexual entertainment venue in Leamington objectionable?

This morning, I debated this issue live on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire with the owner of Shades ‘Gentleman’s club’ (the Trish Adudu show from about 2 hours 10 mins in).

The club has a bar with (clothed) pole dancing and private booths where clients can see topless (£10) or naked (£20) lap dancing. I agree with the report in Camden that lap dancing is a ‘fast fantasy’ that is demeaning to women http://www.childtrafficking.com/Docs/poppy_03_lap_dancing_0109.pdf . It also says that in Camden rapes and violent assaults increased dramatically when such clubs opened as they increase desire without satisfying it. In South Leamington, we’re told many residents feel less safe, but are reluctant to speak up.  We’ve also spoken to shopkeepers close to the club who think it makes the area seedy and is bad for their trade.

This club is applying of a ‘Sexual Entertainment’ licence, so you can email the Council (David.Davies@warwickdc.gov.uk ) to support or oppose it by 6th December: you must include your name and address and quote application number WDCSEL001.
